Removable Partials

For the patient who is missing teeth, but would prefer not to have an implant bridge, a partial denture is an alternative to consider. A removable partial is an appliance held in place by your existing teeth and gums and with a pink or gum colored plastic and metal structure that connects them. Partial dentures look like your natural teeth and are comprised of strong and comfortable material. A partial fills in the space created by missing teeth and makes your smile complete.  Removable partial dentures attach to your natural teeth with metal clasps or devices called attachments. Precision attachments are generally more pleasing in appearance than metal clasps and they are nearly invisible.

Crowns on your natural teeth may improve the fit of a removable partial and are often required with attachments. In order to support a partial denture, existing teeth must be healthy and may need some type of treatment prior to making the partial. Partials help the remaining teeth stay in position, equally distribute chewing stress throughout the mouth and can even improve a person’s ability to talk.

It can be difficult to speak clearly when you are missing teeth. As a consequence, wearing a partial denture, may help. If you find it hard to pronounce certain words with your new denture, try repeating the words that give you trouble or try reading them aloud. With time, you will become accustomed to speaking properly with your new denture.

Replacing missing teeth should also make eating a more pleasant experience. As you start to become accustomed to your new partial, it is recommended that you start out eating soft foods cut into small pieces and chew on both sides of the mouth to keep even pressure on the denture. Avoid foods that are extremely sticky or hard at first. You may want to avoid chewing gum while you adjust to the denture.

Dr. Polasky and her team will guide you through the process and make sure you are comfortable and well informed about how to adjust and make the most of your new removable partial denture.
